How It All Began
NOMOS Glashütte is a German watchmaking company with its chief production centre nestled amidst the serene forests and hills of Glashütte, Saxony. It was founded by Roland Schwertner in January 1990. Set up in the wake of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the designs for the company’s very first collection were inspired by the Bauhaus purist style and were brought to life by Susanne Günther. NOMOS Glashütte is a member of the Deutscher Werkbund, a German association of designers, artists, architects, and industrialists that upholds the principle of combining design with functionality and handcrafted excellence with the accuracy of industrial creation. Presently, over 260 NOMOS employees spread across Glashütte, Berlin, and New York weave their magic every day to create watches and calibers of the highest quality.
Traditional Craftsmanship Meets Contemporary Styles
NOMOS designs are acclaimed for their pristine and chic appeal. Every timepiece created at NOMOS Glashütte combines the designer’s creativity and eye for a flawless design. The magic begins at Berlinerblau, NOMOS’s in-house design studio located a couple of hours’ drive away from Glashütte in the Kreuzberg district. It is here that every timepiece gets its classic NOMOS look before the actual watch construction takes place at the chronometry building in Glashütte. While some watches are fashioned in collaboration with eminent designers, others are entirely the creation of NOMOS’s in-house product designers - the result is a perfect wristwatch that embodies mechanical accuracy with aesthetic design.
NOMOS Glashütte is one of the rare companies that designs and develops its own calibers. Keeping Glashütte’s 175 years of rich watchmaking tradition alive, every piece at NOMOS is almost entirely handcrafted. The NOMOS watchmakers’ incredible amount of dedication and attention to detail reflects in the refined components of the movements - a feat that demands a great deal of expertise, patience, and professionalism. Quality, however, is never compromised, and the use of machines and technology comes in only when precision is at stake.
Models, Calibers, and Innovations
What started with only the four classic models (Tangente, Ludwig, Orion, Tetra) in 1992 has expanded into thirteen model families with a wide range of variations and sizes. Each mechanical timepiece draws inspiration from the glorious legacy of Glashütte while at the same time conforming to the fast and active modern lifestyle. NOMOS Glashütte does not simply stop at Bauhaus-inspired design and elegance - it goes a step ahead to build its in-house movements with currently eleven in-house calibers in production. A breakthrough for the company came in 2014 with the unveiling of its in-house escapement - the famous NOMOS swing system. The innovation eliminated the company’s reliance on Swiss manufacturers and upgraded subsequent caliber ranges - the latest being the 2018 release called ‘neomatik date’ or the DUW 6101. These caliber range upgrades begin with the acronym DUW or Deutsche Uhrenwerke (German Clockworks).
The sheer effort and commitment of NOMOS watchmakers and designers are what makes the brand a prestigious name, not just in Germany but all over the world. Every quality timepiece made here preserves the essence of the age-old tradition of watchmaking and combines it with contemporary class - a quality that makes every NOMOS creation timeless.
